Lewis Hamilton Doc
IMPACT CAMPAIGN:
D.R.I.V.E. AND STEM MOTORSPORT EXPERIENCE
INFORMATION:
Over the course of 4 adrenaline filled days, 1Community brought 100 youth of color to Austin, TX for the Black Students in STEM Motorsport Experience. Students attended a private meet-and-greet with Lewis Hamilton where they were able to ask him questions and be inspired by his resilience; talked to and wowed the Mercedes engineering team; participated in a pitch competition with Lewis’ own fuel engineer and Assistant Director of Sporting Stephanie Travers as a judge; and finally see Lewis compete in the Grand Prix.
Not only was this a great hands-on STEM experience for the students but also an amazing time to bond with students of like-minded interests. Being a young person of color in these studies and fields can sometimes be an isolating experience. You might be the only woman in your engineering class, or the only person of color in a high-level engineering class, and now because of this experience, these students know that they are not alone and that they have support to get them wherever their dreams may take them.
IMPACT PARTNERS:
An initiative in partnership with Anti-Recidivism Coalition and the NBA, Represent Justice facilitated a series of basketball games and intimate roundtable discussions that highlighted stories of hope, redemption and the power of sports and community inside prison facilities across the United States.
